Some resources for Collection Development and Management

This is my idea journal, where I can keep the titles, ideas, resources and other minutia that I discover while studying and working as a librarian. It will be varied, and it will likely be messy, but it is mine and I am happy to share it.

Some resources for Collection Development and Management

Starred Reviews:

TEL - Tennessee Electronic Library http://tntel.tnsos.org
  • will give reviews but not tell you that they are starred reviews - you must actually click on the link to the url to the review to see if it is starred.
  • TEL Shortcuts
    • Research
      • Gale PowerSearch
        • Advanced Search
          • Enter title (or part if long), author,  and then from the dropdown menu "by type" - bookreview
            • Booklist :  accessed via TEL, otherwise subscriber only content
              • lists lexile score
              • does not tell if a starred review
              • has filters on the right hand side of the screen to help narrow results
                • Select Full text, Children's, and can select must contain images
SLJ - School Library Journal  / SLJ Starred Reviews

           http://www.slj.com   or    http://www.slj.com/tag/slj-stars-list/
  • SLJ - the first link
    • Will show reviews but not tell you they are starred reviews unless you click on the link to read the review itself.
    • VERY easy to use - just type in the title and author into the search bar, and if there is a review, it will bring it up
  • SLJ Starred Reviews , the second link,
    • will take you to a page where you can view all the starred reviews from each month in chronological order - a nice feature for browsing a bit at a time
    • Books are divided into genres : picture books, middle grades, YA, graphic novels, non-fiction, adult books for teens, reference, audiobooks, dvds, AND music.
    • Links are provided to each book review
Publisher's Weekly
  • Verdict: nice to browse in free time, not as easy to use, esp if pressed for time
  • Back issues are subscriber only content
  • current issue browses as a digital copy of the magazine, in a pdf type format

Kirkus     https://www.kirkusreviews.com/ or   https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/

  • Shows starred reviews
  • searchable by category/genre
  • can look up by author, title
  • uses age range for picture books, over lexile
  • lists read-alikes recommended by their critics on the right hand side
  • has a "best of 20XX" list of starred reviews and recommended titles

MORE ON LEXILE SCORES - from the company's webpage

The tables below show the middle 50% of reader measures and text measures for each grade. The middle 50% is called the interquartile range (IQR). The lower number in each range marks the 25th percentile of readers or texts and the higher number in each range marks the 75th percentile of readers or texts. It is important to note that 25% of students and texts in the studies had measures below the lower number and 25% had measures above the higher number. Data for the reader measures came from a national sample of students.

Lexile sometimes uses a two letter code as well, in addition to their number system. For more information on that visit : https://lexile.com/about-lexile/lexile-codes/

Some schools use a different company - Accelerated Reader (AR) which uses an ATOS score
